What the ‘Evidence’ Was Ever Actually For

How the same ecosystem that dismissed October 7 sexual violence documentation credulously accepted unverified claims of Israeli rape dogs.

A claim has gone viral: Israel is training dogs to rape Palestinian prisoners.

The sourcing chain runs like this. Shaiel Ben-Ephraim — a former academic who published a piece last June titled “Why I Turned My Back on Zionism” and now presents himself as a whistleblower against the IDF — compiled unverified detainee testimonies from advocacy organizations including the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor and CAIR, claimed to have spoken to guards at Sde Teiman, and packaged the result as overwhelming evidence of a systematic program. Electronic Intifada, a Palestine-focused advocacy outlet, amplified it. Owen Jones, a British journalist with a large left-wing following, cited the Chile precedent of a dog trained under Pinochet as proof of concept for Israel. Drop Site News, the independent outlet co-founded by Ryan Grim, published accounts without independent verification. Ali Abunimah, Electronic Intifada’s co-founder, called it among the most bestial atrocities he’d ever read.

Two things are worth noting about Ben-Ephraim specifically. First, he frames his claims around Sde Teiman — the detention facility whose central sexual violence allegation was not supported by the investigation, never appeared in the final indictment, and ended in dropped charges. In his Substack, he describes the IDF’s top lawyer as having “admitted responsibility for leaking a video showing soldiers sexually abusing a Palestinian detainee” and being “forced out” for doing her job. What actually happened: she was arrested and faces prosecution — not for exposing abuse, but for illegally leaking evidence from an ongoing investigation, coordinating a cover-up, and misleading two IDF chiefs of staff and the High Court. Second, his credibility in these circles derives almost entirely from his Israeli background and his public break with Zionism — the defector credential that makes him useful precisely because he appears to be confessing on behalf of his own side. Some outlets went further, describing him as a ‘former Israeli intelligence officer’ — a characterization that appears to conflate mandatory IDF conscription with intelligence work, and for which no evidence has been provided. Ben-Ephraim left UCLA's Nazarian Center for Israel Studies in 2020 following tweeted allegations of sexual harassment. In the original podcast, Ben-Ephraim himself acknowledged the dog rape claims were ‘not verified’ — a caveat that disappeared entirely as the claim traveled through Electronic Intifada, Owen Jones, and Novara Media.

The flagship case beneath all of this is Sde Teiman. In July 2024, ten IDF reservists were arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a Palestinian detainee. The video — leaked by the IDF’s own Advocate General to a Channel 12 correspondent — exploded internationally. It seemed damning: soldiers taking a prisoner behind riot shields, away from cameras.

Except the riot shield barrier is standard Force 100 procedure during searches, for reasons requiring no sinister explanation. An investigative journalist at Kan 11 identified that the video carried two different timestamps — and on one of the dates, the prisoner wasn’t in the facility. The footage appeared to have been doctored. The prisoner’s complaint of sexual abuse was registered only on August 5th — almost a week after his arresters were detained, and according to testimony, only after he asked “what do I get in return if I tell?” The final indictment, submitted in February 2025, contained no sexual charges. In March, charges were dropped entirely. The Advocate General who leaked the footage has since resigned, been arrested, and faces prosecution — not for exposing abuse, but for fabricating the appearance of it.

Aaron Maté, a journalist and podcast host who has repeatedly characterized October 7 sexual violence claims as fabricated, called the dropping of charges proof that Israel grants impunity to rapists. He made no mention of what the investigation actually found.

While the dog rape claims were going viral, something else was happening: the systematic dismissal of the Pramila Patten report.

Patten is the United Nations Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict. Her March 2024 report on October 7 documented rape, gang rape, sexual mutilation, and assault of the deceased — on the basis of physical evidence, forensic findings, witness testimony, and victim accounts gathered by a nine-person technical team with a formal UN mandate. By any standard measure of evidentiary rigor, it is among the more carefully documented sexual violence investigations produced since the war began.

The response from the same ecosystem that circulated the dog rape claims: the report was Israeli propaganda. Norman Finkelstein, an academic and longtime critic of Israeli policy who has built a career disputing what he considers inflated or fabricated claims about Jewish suffering, dismissed October 7 sexual violence claims as “genocidal atrocity propaganda” and called the Patten report “rubbish.” Maté described October 7 sexual violence documentation as a hoax promoted to justify mass murder. Abier Khatib characterized related UK government funding as financing “rape propaganda.”

Source credibility in this ecosystem is determined entirely by narrative fit. Evidence implicating Israel passes at minimal threshold. Evidence implicating Hamas demands impossible proof. Drop Site News will publish any account of Israeli abuse without verification while treating October 7 documentation as propaganda.

The cost extends beyond Israel’s reputation. When evidence only counts when it confirms what you already believe, accountability becomes impossible for anyone. The victims this framework most directly abandons are the women raped on October 7, whose attackers are being handed a retroactive denial by the same people who claim sexual violence as a core moral concern.

You can hold two things at once: that Israeli detention conditions have produced credible, documented abuse allegations warranting serious investigation — and that a viral claim about trained rape dogs, built on a collapsed case and an advocacy podcast, does not meet any serious evidentiary bar. Choosing which claims to believe before examining them tells you what the ‘evidence’ was ever actually for.
