There is a Jewish instinct to count days—not because numbers matter, but because people do. The counting ends; the obligation to remember does not.

Hersh was never “one hostage.” He was a son, a friend, a future that was stolen. Whatever history ultimately concludes about the decisions made during this terrible war, Israel will honor itself by examining them honestly. Democracies worthy of defending are also courageous enough to engage in self-examination.
